An Abia royal father, Dr Uwadiegwu Ogbonnaya, has lauded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) free medical outreach for communities in the state.
Ogbonnaya, who is the Traditional Ruler of Umuanyi Autonomous Community, Uturu in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia, made the commendation during the free medicare in his community.
He called on the Federal Govermnent to sustain the exercise, tagged: “Health Initiative for Ruler Dwellers”.
He described it as one of the most laudable programmes initiated by the scheme.
He thanked the corps members for embarking on the programme basically targetted at the indigent persons in the state.
Ogbonnaya also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the National Health Insurance Bill into law.
“I’m calling on my people to take advantage of this opportunity, because a lot of people die for lack of medical care, in short, for of lack of money.
“So, I commend NYSC for the initiative.
“May I also thank Emmanuel Mbaka Foundation for the sponsorship,” he said.
Chief Acho Kalu, a Village Head in the community and a beneficiaries of the programme, expressed joy and thanked the scheme for the initiative.
“Many people in my community had their health status checked and those who had one health challenge or another were attended to.
“The good thing about this is that everything is free, including the drugs administered to us,” Kalu said.
Another beneficiary, Mrs Mary Ugwu, expressed gratitude to NYSC and the sponsors for the free medicare.
The NYSC Coordinator in Abia, Mr Denis Jingi, said the programme was part of the NYSC’s Community Development Service to help the downtrodden and render selfless service to members of the community.
Jingi thanked Mr Emmanuel Mbaka for sponsoring the exercise through his foundation.
He called on other well-meaning natives of the area to support the scheme to ensure its success.
The medical team conducted diagnosis, minor medical procedures, treatments and eye checks on patients.
It also administered drugs and made referrals and handed out medical consumables to the patients.
