Flooding: Rivers LG Reconstructs Bridges, Roads

The Andoni local government area in Rivers has embarked on reconstruction of bridges and road to mitigate damages caused by perennial flooding in riverside communities.

Mr Erastus Awortu, Chairman of the council, at the inspection of the projects at Usabamu/Father Bridge and roads in Unyeada Community and Asarama Community, said it would address lingering challenges of perennial flooding in the area.

“Infrastructure development is key in the policy thrust of my administration because we are committed to improving on the livelihood of our people.

“We will continue to ensure equitable distribution of critical infrastructure to preserve our environment and boost our local economy.

“Usabamu bridge sited in Unyeada Community was in a very deplorable state when we assumed office, but today, you can see that we are consciously trying to upgrade it to serve the growing needs of our people.

“We are trying to deliver a dual carriage bridge, we also look forward to dualizing the stretch of road housing the bridge,” he said.

While Expressing satisfaction at the pace of work so far, the council boss tasked the Contractor on timely completion of the job billed for inauguration this year.

Meanwhile, some residents of benefiting Communities have thanked the local government council for reconstructing the Usabamu bridge.

One of such respondent, Mr Emma Nsan said aside enhancing mobility, the bridge when completed would also address the problem of perennial flooding usually associated with the rainy seasons in the area.
