Sweden Suspend Ex-NBA Basketballer After Joining Russian Club

The Swedish national basketball team has suspended former NBA professional Jonas Jerebko until further notice.

His suspension came after he signed a contract with leading Russian club CSKA Moscow, the federation SBBF said this yesterday.

Talks took place between SBBF general secretary Fredrik Joulamo and the 35-year-old Jerebko on Wednesday.

That was when it was made clear wanting to play in Russia was incompatible with the values of Swedish basketball.

“After this dialogue we unfortunately had to decide there was not the conditions for Jonas Jerebko to represent the Swedish national basketball team,” Joulamo said.

Jerebko is considered his country’s best player and played several years in the NBA, including with the Golden State Warriors of superstar Stephen Curry.

He moved to Russia with BK Chimki in 2019 but was without a club for a year before joining CSKA until the end of the season.

“It’s an honour to join such a historic club as CSKA,” the team quoted Jerebko saying. “I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to play basketball again and I am really excited to join the team.”
